Altra Hiking Shoes & Boots — Built for the Walk, Not the Showroom
Altra's hiking shoes and boots take everything we've learned from years on running's roughest terrain and apply it to multi-day hikes, day walks, and everything in between. Every shoe in the range starts with the same foundation as our trail running shoes: a roomy FootShape™ toe box for natural toe splay, a Zero-to-Low Drop platform for balanced foot positioning, and a Vibram® Megagrip outsole for grip on wet rock, mud, and granite.
What sets Altra hikers apart is what's missing — the bulk. Where most hiking boots use heavy leather, stiff midsoles, and tall stability towers, Altra builds hike-ready shoes that feel closer to a trail runner than a traditional boot. Lighter on the foot, more breathable, faster to break in, and just as protective for the kind of hiking most Australians actually do.
The range covers two main shapes. Mid-cut boots like the Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid, Olympus 6 Hike Mid GTX, Timp 6 Mid GTX, and Timp Hiker GTX add ankle support and weather protection for multi-day walks, alpine routes, and pack-carrying days. Low-cut hiking shoes like the Olympus 6 Hike Low GTX and the Lone Peak 9+ GTX bring waterproof protection in a faster, more flexible package — perfect for day walks, fastpacking, and runners who hike too.
Find the Right Hiking Shoe for Your Walk
For multi-day walks and pack-carrying — the Larapinta, the AAWT, the Bibbulmun — the Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid and Olympus 6 Hike Mid GTX are the standouts. Mid-cut ankle support, GORE-TEX® waterproofing, plush cushioning under load, and Vibram® Megagrip for confidence on wet rock and creek crossings.
For day walks and weekend hikes, low-cut options give you most of the protection without the weight. The Olympus 6 Hike Low GTX and Lone Peak 9+ GTX are waterproof shoes that move closer to the ground feel of a trail runner — ideal for the kind of "hike fast, hike light" approach that's grown popular in Australian bushwalking circles.
For wet weather and stream crossings, every GTX-marked model uses GORE-TEX® lining for waterproof, breathable protection. Tasmanian winters, alpine shoulder seasons, and rainforest hikes all reward dry feet.
For runners who hike (or hikers who run), the line between Altra's trail running shoes and hiking shoes is intentionally thin. Many of our hiking shoes start as trail running platforms — so if you cover ground both ways, you're already familiar with the geometry.
Why Australian Hikers Choose Altra
Most hiking boots are built around the assumption that hikers want a fortress on their feet — heavy, structured, ankle-clamped. Altra takes the opposite view. The roomy toe box gives your toes space to function on long descents (where standard boots crush toes against the front of the shoe and bruise toenails). Zero-drop encourages a balanced, natural foot strike that builds foot strength rather than relying on stiff support.
The result for most hikers: lighter on the foot through hour eight, less foot fatigue at camp, fewer toenails lost to long descents, and a shoe that breaks in within a hike or two rather than over weeks. For more on the Altra design philosophy, see The Altra Fit.
